Please lord, no more social networks

With TechCrunch reporting that both Google and Yahoo! are working on next-generation social networks, am I the only one who’s had an overdose of social software?

The number of social networks that I’m a member of now takes me too many fingers to count. There’s MySpace, and Facebook; LinkedIn, and Orkut; that Yahoo! thing that I can’t even remember the name of, and it’s Microsoft equivalent. Will this madness never end?

The technological solution, which some people are positing, is some kind of open standard, allowing you to take your contacts and identity from place to place. But the problem isn’t really technological at all - it’s social. I want to be where my friends are. It’s not enough for me to use Jaiku, which I think is the better product, because most of my friends use Twitter instead. It’s not the best technology which wins, it’s the one that’s most popular with my friends.
